  1. I am a licensed vet tech and have done rescue work (ferret rescue and volunteering at shelters and sanctuaries).

A vet tech needs a 2 or 4 year degree and then has to pass a board exam to get licensed.  Depending on the state, they have to earn so much continuing education (from classes, seminars, etc.) in order to maintain the license.  You can look on the AVMA website for lots of info about this.

Rescue work is mostly experience and passion - a degree is almost wasteful because you won't be making any money.  I think most people start out by volunteering with other rescues/shelters.  It takes immense dedication, time, and money in order to do this yourself.
