Anybody any idea where "vire" in france is? is it near any major cities?

It is in Calvados, Normandy, in North West France, not very far from Paris.  There are some other cities nearer.

Vire is located in Normandy, between Caen & Mont St-Michel

It's more like 3 hours from Paris, than 2 (unless you fly with an helicopter)

There are no major cities around (the neerest is St-Lo, but that is not big at all. )

The main town related to the local life is Caen (that is pretty big)

They make delicious smoked saussage called "andouille" and it's also knowned for stainless steel krafts ( like forks and knifes (Guy Degrenne)

It was entirely destroyed by american bombing during WW2
