ABC News asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., if he had any response to Gov. Sarah Palin's statement that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant.

"Let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people's families are off limits," Obama said, "and people's children are especially off limits.

"This shouldn't be part of our politics," he continued, "It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.

"And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories," he said. "You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and, you know, teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off limits."

I do not plan on voting for Obama, but I do agree with him on this point of view, do you?

  1. He is being very noble however if you think his camp is not enjoying the spotlight being on Palin and over shadowing McCain your dead wrong.

  2. I agree. Too bad his supporters don't listen to what he says.

  3. I agree with you on both counts.

  4. I totally agree with him, but do his handlers? Time will tell.

  5. Yes, but it is the only thing that I agree with him on.

  6. It's a classy thing to do.

  7. Well, I like his answer, but unfortunately you have to look at the factors...

#1, the media is going to go after this either way, so he might as well say the right thing.

#2, he is able to pre-empt the question about "well how old was your mom when she had you?", which they eventually would if he answered the other way.

I'm not saying he's not sincere, but with politicians, my guess is that his team drafted this response as the best possible way to respond to this.  If the math came out that he would get more votes if he said he was appauled, he probably would.

    Also,

#3, it makes me wonder if his family has some skeletons in the clauset, because he is saying that "family is off limits", as if they figure they'll eventually find something about his own family.  Maybe his daughter had an abortion or something.  (I don't even know if he has a daughter of that age, I'm just speculating that, or something like it).

  8. I am not an Obama supporter but I think this was a very classy thing to do.  He is consistent in his message and I believe his motive to be genuine.

I applaud him for taking a stance on this issue.

  9. I applaud his firm stance on the issue. I completely agree with him and I appreciate his decision to respect the daughter's privacy. He could have easily made the pregnancy a political issue, turning the discussion toward Palin's support for abstinence only s*x education and the like.

  10. I totally agree, and I'd bet that the Conservatives have backed-off with any outrage regarding teen pregnancy.

  11. I agree it is about the men running for office not the families a classy statement.

  12. Yes I agree to not talk about the child. But why didn't McCain do the same thing when they were attacking his wife?  See the difference in the quality of the men. I will vote for him, because of John McCains ignorance, the way he curses at women, and his lack of good judgement
