I'm in Special Ed and I absolutely hate it. I'm only in for having ADHD, or so they say. I used to be pretty bad but not it sorta died out. I don't find myself hyper at all and are able to listen to the teachers instructions and retain all the information. But, anyways back to the point. Anyone else in SE and hate it? I find it kinda scary because I constantly have to watch what I say to people because there are alot of kids in my school that freak out just over one little thing, for example I said that High School Musical was stupid and then this kid was trying to beat me up because of it.

  1. Special ed isn't a placement, its a classification of services and supports provided by the school to help those with different needs. As someone else said, most kids with adhd do not attend a separate class, much less a separate school. You are of age to call your own IEP and work on transition skills. Now is the time to talk to your parents and get out of there.

I have two very disabled kids who were in regular classrooms. That's the entire point of IDEA, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

  2. If you are ADHD and medicated for it, or are able to perform academic tasks without medication, you might investigate the possibility of gradually increasing your time in the regular placement in your best subject areas.  What you need to know is that you can still receive modifications and accommodations in the regular class placement as a student with ADHD.  Can you do the work in the regular class with some modifications?  Your parents can request a meeting at any time to discuss this possibility.  As a SpEd teacher, I will often work with the regular teacher to get the regular kids' assignments and work with my special kid to see if he/she can do the work.  Sometimes they can, and the kid goes into the regular class.  I check on him from time to time to make sure he maintains at least a D in the regular class. Often, kids find the regular work too hard and change their mind about leaving the special class.  You have to work hard, much harder than others, to be successful.  Are you willing?

  3. I am. There's only 2 other kids besides me and I get more attention than I feel comfortable with. It does suck, but hang in there.

  4. Okay so to get out of special education classes you have to have an A or B, your general education teachers approval, and your special education teacher's approval, and an IEP team meeting with the admins and your teachers, and your parents and you.  You also need to be able to keep your grades up in regular classes and improve your behavior!

  5. You shouldn't have to be in special ed classes just because you have ADHD.  Many children with ADHD never see the inside of a special education classroom.  There should be opportunities for you to be in regular education classes, too.  Your parents have a legal right to refuse to have you receive special education services.  You do not have to have an A or B or your regular education teacher's permission.  Your teacher has to accept you in his/her class no matter what--it's public school.

  6. to actually "get out" of special ed classes you have to have a meeting and the parents has to agree to let you out... or during your 3 year re-eval if they find that you no longer qualify, then you will  no longer recieve serives.. It has nothing to do with grades.

You prob are classified as OHI or other health impairment. Which ADHD can be under, if it interferes with your academic performance.

If you still would like to recieve mods/accoms then you must either have an IEP or 504 in record. To have a 504 you need documentation, and the parents has to come in for a 504 meeting, its simular to a ARC (IEP meeting). Unless you have one of these on file, the teacher/school does not have to provide you with accomidations. And legally not allowed to provide them on any state testing.

  7. Wow!! You are in special ed for ADHD?  What school district? Most districts don't have students in special ed for ADHD.  Have your parent or guardian reconvene the IEP.

  8. If you are not sure why you are actually in Special Education classes you need to look in your IEP and see what it says. It will list many different things, such as Learning Disability, Autism, Communication Disorder, etc....  You need to know these important things and then you can advocate for yourself.  If you can't speak to your parents, talk to your Teacher of Record.
