  2. Hi.

Landau Kleffner syndrome is a type of aphasia.  It is characterised by the loss of ability to understand and use spoken language.  It usually occurs in children between the age of 3 - 7 years and is usually accompanied by nocturnal epilepsy.

Children with this disorder are sometimes mistakenly thought to be suffering from autism.  It is quite rare and the long term outcome of children with LKS has not been studies, however there have been reports of complete recovery in adulthood.

The entire problem seems to hinge on the development of the nocturnal epileptic episodes, which disturb the brain's communication centres. - The EEG reports of children with LKS show grossly abnormal activity in both hemispheres of the brain, however these normally stabilise in early adulthood with EEG's returning to normal and epileptic activity decreasing or disappearing.

    Hope this helps.
