  1. Stop worrying about the price, and start looking at the cost.  The price is the sticker amount you pay for a gallon.  The cost is how much money leaves your pocket due to price and your behavior.

    1 consumer out of trillions cannot modify the cost of gasoline at the pumps.  But, you can greatly modify how much gas you use.

    If a gallong gasoline costs 4 US dollars and you use 5 a day, that is 20 dollars a day drain. Instead of using so much energy and brainpower obsessing over the price, why not think of ways of lowering that 5 gallons to 4.  4 gallons is 16 dollars a day.  the difference of using 4 gallons instead of 5, is equivalent to a 20% drop in the price.  In other words, using 4 gallons instead of five is like paying 3.20 cents a gallon instead of 4 dollars.

    Costs is what matters, not price.


  2. i had i email sent to me saying that one way we could help cut the prices is if the whole country or at least a big majority of it would boycott the 2 biggest fuel companies i.e. esso and BP.

    If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

    sounds a simple idea but to have any effect it would have to be done on a large scale but the idea did interest me and wondered if it would actually make a difference or not.

Dont go to work, dont pay your bills, if the corporations think they are invincible, lets show them how they make their money, of course trying to convince people of this would be impossible.  They can keep charging what they charge because people have no choice, threaten the whole system we live by and i guarantee you prices will fall drmatically and companies will be happy to make 1 billion in profits each year, instead of 40.

  4. TERRAFIRE, it's illegal to use red diesel for a road vehicle. Even vintage tractors going on a road run are supposed to flush the red diesel out of their tanks and refill with white diesel, same as everyone else uses.

    Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us  to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take  aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place

    not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we  consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the  price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not

    For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

    If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

    Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

    I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it  to  at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at  least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the

    message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached  over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and

    pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..

    THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

    Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and  not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us  sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt,

    all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the  next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference .

The rise was easily predictable, we all knew the supply was going down and since China and India economies were growing, the need for energy would of-course increase.  It will become worse if African countries can also get their economies into order, which is quite possible in the next few decades.

    The matter of energy use is set to grow over the next decades with dire consequences for known sources, but Africa might well turn out to have years of fossil fuels in store.

    It is rectifiable really only by an increase in supply and use of other kinds of energies like nuclear, coal, wind and wave.

    Persoanlly I think coal will be used more and the western stance on the environment is unsustainable if they wish to keep to the same standard of living as today.

    Alternatively rationing may be adopted, to allow many people though inconvenienced will hav ethe ability to move around. Probably we will find people will have to justify their car journey by gaining permission to drive before they can use their own car. It seems to be in this direction government policy is currently heading.

    The liberals may call it responsible environmentally friendly economics, but in reality they will ensure they and the rich will still jet around the world as they like.

    Just following what happens always in crises like this.

  9. yes, it's ridiculous, but...

    the problem is not the price of fuel, which is controlled more or less by supply and demand factors of the market.

    the problem is the collapse of our dollar, which we all see as higher prices every time that we go to the market or the gas pump.  

    That problem is caused by the Fed expanding the money supply.  More dollars = less value (purchasing power) per dollar = price increases which have nothing to do with supply/demand.  

    Our congress, and that includes the DemRep prez candidates, could stop the Fed's manipulation of our dollar and economy by simply removing those powers of the Fed.  Then prices could and would become stable as the free market becomes again free to function.

  11. There is some reason to believe that the high cost of fuel is due to investors buying oil as a hedge against the falling value of the US dollar. Essentially, I buy a barrel of oil today for, say, $100 in the hopes that it'll be worth $130 tomorrow, making a $30 dollar profit. A simplification, but that's the basic logic. One problem here is that, since the price of oil is denominated in dollars, buying oil only weakens the dollar further, making oil more expensive and driving speculation in a vicious cycle sort of situation. Speculation of this sort may be inflating the price of oil beyond its actual market value, and oil/fuel prices may fall once speculative investors decide to sell off their oil assets.

    Unfortunately, even if this were to happen, the price of fuel would still remain fairly high, since it is largely driven by new demand from India and China, as well as high and expanding demand from OECD countries (US/EU/Japan). The only way to effectively stop the rising cost of fuel is to cut back on demand across the board or to increase supplies of energy.

    Cutting demand means driving less often and driving more fuel-efficient vehicles, using more public transportation, and using energy-efficient appliances. It does not mean one day gas strike schemes or that stupid "boycott Exxon/BP" idea. I recommend everyone visit www.snopes.com to see why those ideas will not only fail, but will very likely exacerbate the problem they purport to solve.

    Increasing supply would mean increasing oil production. In the US, for example, there is occasional talk of drilling in ANWR to improve domestic supply. Unfortunately, according to factcheck.org, this will provide only a minimal improvement to our supply (about 876,000 barrels/day added to our present production of about 5.1 million barrels/day) compared to our domestic demand (about 20 million barrels/day). There has also been discussion of drilling in our outer continental shelf, though I am not certain of the prospects for energy production there. Moreover, none of this additional production will impact gas prices without expanded refining capacity to turn the oil into gasoline. Oil companies have little interest in expanding their refining capacity, since refineries are expensive to operate and it's simply more profitable to run fewer of them. Those that are running are at full capacity presently.

    The other thing to do is to expand alternative forms of energy. Switching power plants from oil to clean coal (if it really is "clean") or natural gas might be a short-term solution - though these commodities, too, are ultimately limited, like oil and natural gas is rising in price. Solar, wind, and hydro power are ideal long term power sources, but will require significant investments to expand their capacity. More nuclear power is another option, though many have significant qualms about the risks of meltdown and waste management. Using less oil in power plants means more oil available for other uses.

    Long story short, though, the only way to actually bring fuel prices down is to use less fuel.
