  1. i dont know where you live but i send all my   apprentaces to the hobby lobby and tell them to get the sketch books they have some of the best books for the price only 9 bucks and you can get them on portraits

  2. I would refer you to Dr. Betty Edwards book and site, "Drawing From The Right Side Of The Brain". She can give you some great methods and tested techniques. And most of all, you will see examples of how well her ideas helped people to draw.

  3. practice and knack..you do one thing.first have a clear black&white  post card size bust photo.trace it(there are several ways).or trasform a color one in to black/white through computer and enlatge as much as possible then have a print copy.by enlarging you loose light shades and only the darker ones remain.then on the print out try penciling.like practising this way u get trained.u can just deform the printed one suitably with u r pencil without loosing the features ..it becomes caricature.

  4. Don't make the first drawing the one that counts.

Spend lots of hour practicing your drawing skills before you start doing the actual portrait.  When you think you are ALMOST ready, spend some more time doing a lot of quick sketches of your subject.  Try doing these sketches from several angles, so that your hand, as well as your eye gets to "know" the subject very well.

By the time you begin the actual portrait, captureing the likeness of your subject should come very easily.

  5. I learned by lightly graphing my paper and using a pic of myself. I would then use another graph I can put on my pic so I can eye ball what part of my face goes in which box.

It's best to learn the anatomy of the human face b4 u start.

This book will be able to help u in techniques and the anatomy of drawing the face and head.

U don't have to order it online, u can find it in the bookstore (Borders Books or Half Price Bookstore r ur best bet, Books a Million is a little high, but they have the book there to).

  6. Practice, practice and more practice. In fact never stop practicing because practice makes better.
