  1. "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

    Based on Homer's "The Oddysey"

Old man on the railroad handcar = The Oracle

    John Goodman = Cyclops

    Ulysses Everett McGill = Odysseus

    Sirens

Ulysses wife being courted by a suitor

    .

  2. Well, Ulysses, by James Joyce, obviously.

Shakespeare - chock full of mythological allusions. Just for example, in Henrvy V, the opening line is "Oh, for a muse of fire ..."

Part of one of my favorite speeches goes:

"No, not all these, thrice-gorgeous ceremony,

Not all these, laid in bed majestical,

Can sleep so soundly as the wretched slave,

Who with a body fill'd and vacant mind

    Gets him to rest, cramm'd with distressful bread;

Never sees horrid night, the child of h**l,

But, like a lackey, from the rise to set

Sweats in the eye of Phoebus and all night

Sleeps in Elysium; next day after dawn,

Doth rise and help Hyperion to his horse,

And follows so the ever-running year,

With profitable labour, to his grave"

Then of course, there is pretty much the entire text of  "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Tempest", etc.

Actually, I have this theory that the entire series "Battlestar Galactica" is actually "The Aeneid" in disguise.

  3. tolkiens world describes his MYth,he called it.

it was said he thought excalber as a myth-or maybe good story telling,is what inspired him to write his own. took 20 years,

one interviewer said he didnt descibe the story as false,or as some critics would suggest escapism,,escape? flight of the prisoner or escape of the desserter, which would be a more noble thing. brilliant writer.

  4. The Orphans of Chaos series. I forgot who wrote it.

    the Devil May Cry games

    Buffy the Vampire Slayer

    Charmed

    ETC.

Really, if you look at most tv shows/movies with any fantasy you can find something.
