  1. Vienne is a small town just south of Lyon, nice but not really too much to visit... (There is also the departement de Vienne (see the other answers for reference to it), but that is not near Lyon.

Lyon however is a beautiful city, with many things worth seeing and visitng. You have several museums, the cathedral of Saint Jean in the medieval quarter of the town, which leads you into the narrow fifteenth and sixteenth century streets (see especially the Tour Henri IV), all this quarter has lovely little restaurants with excellent cuisine... Lyon itself is known as the gastronomical center of France. Paul Bocuse has his restaurants in the area.Food in Lyon is delicious almost everywhere, any bistrot or small restaurant will fill your tummy quite well and give your taste buds a treat.

Then there is the magnificent Parc de la Tête d'Or with a lovely rose garden and even a small but well kept zoo...

The center of town which has been transformed into mainly pedestrian areas in recent years... The Place des Terreaux, with the city hall, the Opera building,

Place Bellecour with views toward the hill of Fourvière where you have a beautiful Basilica. Musée des Beaux Arts, and other museums such as the one of the fabrics and silk making (Musée des Tissus), Musée de la Marionette, Musée des Hospices Civils, Musée Guimet (natural history) across from the park, Musée de Gadagne (history of Lyon), Musée de la Civilisation gallo-romaine up on the Fourvière hill, Musée de l'Imprimerie et la Banque, Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et la Déportation (on the second world war), etc. (there are more... Another nice one is the Musée de l'Automobile de Rochetaillée, about a 20 min. drive from Lyon).

You have several cinemas in the main part of the city (Rue de la République and vicinity) Plus a multicinema in the Part Dieu shopping center (also worth visitng for shopping).

Lyon is quite beautiful, any stay in Lyon will seem too short!

The areas and small towns on the outskirts are also magnificent (Les Monts d'Or), Limonest, Dardilly, Ecully, Charbonnières (with a nice Casino), etc.

I have family in Lyon, and return whenever possible...

Go to www.lyon-france.com for further information.

  2. Hello Hananah, I'm French and I went to Lyon 3 years ago or so. It's a beautiful city and some districts have been chosen by UNESCO as part of its world heritage. Unfortunately I only stayed one day. Still, I went and visit the Vieux-Lyon (Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul, the Fourvière basilica...), the city hall located on the place des Terreaux and I took a stroll in the Part-Dieux district. There are a lot more places to see though. Here is a website where people that know Lyon better than me give advice about things to do, things to see etc. ( http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Eur... ). Lyon is also well known for its food (rosette, quenelles...) and wine ! There are those typical restaurants called "bouchons" that serve typical food from Lyon. When I was there, I went to the Mercière street : it's full of "bouchons" ! There is still so much to say about Lyon but I'm not an expert on the subject so I don't want to mix things up ! ;(

I'll give you links to great websites that sum up the essential about Lyon :

    http://www.en.lyon-france.com/page/p-554...

    http://www.lyon-photos.com/ (some pictures of Lyon).

As for Vienne, it's a french département (an administrative division of France), so it comprises a lot of cities... Anyway I don't known this département very well... However, Poitiers (in Vienne) is an interesting city and is the most important of the region. You might find useful information here : http://www.mairie-poitiers.fr/

At last, I recommend the Futuroscope near Poitiers which is a theme park ( http://www.futuroscope.com/eng/index.php ). I went there when I was 11 years old (9 years ago ;) and I had a lot of fun ! That's the only place I went to in Vienne ! Good trip !
