I am 19 years old, never smoked, exercise pretty regularly and eat pretty healthy. I have had pain right in the center of my chest (straight behind the sternum) for about a week and a half now, almost 2 weeks. It started suddenly after a stressful situation occurred and now I can't get rid of it. some people have told me that it could be acid reflux, but it doesn't burn; the pain is dull and achy, and sometimes becomes sharp. I can't seem to get rid of it.

any idea what it is?

How to get rid of it?

  1. what causes it to get worse? does it just come on? Definitely seek medical attention. It could be a major heart problem, even though its already been 2 weeks.

However, a minor thing that it might be is costochondritis. Its an inflammation of where the ribs join with the cartillage that holds them to the sternum. This is very common in young people aged 10-21, although the peak age is 12-14. It accounts for 30% of all chest pain in children

  2. My bet would still be acid reflux.  It can feel different for everyone - for me, it's more of that achy feeling - like my chest is really tight or something.  You mentioned a stressful situation, so it might be in response to that.  I would try over-the-counter rantinadine, available at any drugstore. Take it regularly as the bottle directs for a few days, and you should feel better.  Of course, you can always schedule an appt. w/ your doctor to get a more professional prescription(also a good idea if the rantinadine isn't a strong enough drug).  Make sure you take the medicine proactively for a few days - don't wait until it hurts to take the medicine - if you do that for a few days, your stomach and esophagus will have a chance to calm down and heal.  I hope you feel better soon!
