I am thinking about studying physics at University in the hope I can have a career in research. I'm 27 and I'm from Northern England and have a broad near Geordie accent. At school I only achieved DD in science which I hated as I was a bit of a chav but after I left I developed an interest in all areas of science particularly physics and astrophysics which I excelled at and own numerous books. I'm an IT Professional which I thought could get me into University but due to my bad grades I have to complete an access to higher education course in Sept then apply for 2009. My main concern is I notice most of the physicists are southern and have a large vocabulary compared to mine so is this a problem for me or is science based on knowledge and problem solving?

  1. Studying physics involves a lot of complex mathematics, as well as an ability to think analytically. If you are good at doing those things then you have as good a chance as anyone.

  2. schools and colleges are crying for physics teachers, so if you want to teach it and have adegree in it then they will take you on with out a dout

  3. "My main concern is I notice most of the physicists are southern and have a large vocabulary compared to mine"

That is absolutely not an issue at all. I'm also from northern England and I'm going into second year physics and astrophysics at uni. What's important is the ability to problem solve and understand maths.

To become a professional physicist you need to do more education after your basic degree (for example, a phd), which means the process is actually quite long, but if you really want to do it there is nothing stopping you. Even just taking a standard physics degree opens up all kinds of career opportunities.

  4. You can get a career in just about anything -- including PHYSICS with a background in IT.

Find a good place and they may even pay for specialized training.
