Hiya , ok I have a doozy here , I’m trying to find out about reptiles in and around Greece , but this is something I know absolutely nothing about .

What I’m looking for is a reptile of some description that spits venom that’s native to Greece , possibly even only native to the island of Rhodes , I’m aiming more for a lizard than a snake , but as far as I’m aware , I didn’t think lizards could spit venom.

Anybody any idea’s ? , it might even be extinct , I really don’t know

For that matter does anybody know of a lizard in general that spits venom ?

  1. I have never heard of a lizard from Greece that could spit venom but there are a couple of species of lizards that are in fact venomous in the world.

The beaded lizard and the gila monster both contain venom glands and can give a nasty, almost fatal bite when provoked.  However they live in the southwest of the United States and parts of Mexico.

There's also the Komodo dragon but their bite has more to do with the festering bacteria that's in their mouths. The bacteria comes from digesting rotten meat.

  2. With that question you probably have in mind the Dilophosaurus from Jurassic park, the dinosaur that resembled the frilled lizard that spit venom (which there is no scientific evidence proving that that is even true). There are no lizards that spit venom, there are only two that even posses venom (Gila Monster and Beaded Lizard). There are snakes that can spit venom, the spitting cobras, but no lizards. Well, at least none that we currently know about.

  3. There's no such thing other than maybe a mythological character. There are only two venomous lizards in the world, and neither of them spit venom or are found in Europe. The two venomous lizards are the Gila monster (found in Arizona and surrounding areas, not Central America as someone said) and the Mexican beaded lizard. And neither are rear fanged as that same person said. They don't even have fangs. Their mouths are loaded with numerous small teeth. Their saliva contains the venom and they chew on you to inject it. I know people who breed Gila monsters.

  4. Spitting Cobra

  5. There are no lizards that spit venom that have been discovered so far but you can never say never.

  6. i never herd of lizards spitting venom just some cobras i no can

  7. As mentioned earlier the Gila Monster and beaded lizard are the only venomous lizards. Both are rear fanged and it would require multiple bites from either of these to cause a problem unless you have an allergic reaction. Neither can spit.

Both are from central America. To keep either in the UK would require DWA licences.

Maybe you have heard of something from Greek Mythology?

  8. the only venomous lizards are the mexican beader and gila monster of southwest. they have to chew on you to get the venom in. no lizard spits venom
