My arabian gelding has a gorgeous, long mane. lately though, some of the other horses have been chewing on his mane, leaving it ragged and short in spots. i know the chew stop sprays and treatments are mainly for fences and stalls and such, but i was curious if anybody knew of anything that i could put on my gelding's mane to stop the other horses from chewing it? like, home remedies and such? i want to make sure it wont damage his mane, or make my gelding or the other horses sick. please, anybody have any suggestions?

  1. Get a mixture of chili pepper and tobasco sauce, and dilute it in a little bit of water. Spread it over the tips of your horse's mane and where it's being chewed on. Most horses don't like that spicy taste and will stop chewing. The good thing about the mixture is that you can easily rinse it out, and it's not oily.

  2. You might try this:  http://www.neeps.com/546676.html?product...

I know that you wanted home remedies, but I can't think of anything but some kind of liquid soap that the horses won't like, but won't harm the ones that are attempting to chew it.  I have heard of the habit being attributed to the chewer being deficient in something in their diet, but I don't know for sure if there is anything to it or not.  Sometimes, I think it's just a past time or a grooming session getting out of control.  We have tried Tobasco Hot sauce and hot chilies, but it seems to not last very long at all...Do you think that your horse would tolerate one of those mane tamers that look like netting, it would be cooler to wear...that should discourage the chewer at least temporarily...oh, are you putting any products on the mane that might taste good to the chewer?  One of the reasons that horses do chew on non food items is that they don't have enough forage (hay, grass, pasture) to occupy their mouths, so they find something to chew)

  3. Hot Sauce!!! Yummy!! Thats what my mom did cause her donkey was chewing on her geldings tail

  4. There are various sprays that you can buy for dogs to stop them from chewing at injuries etc. Here's just one example that Google  came up with.

if you go for one of these I'd suggest contacting the manufacturers to check that it is safe for use with horses before trying it.

I don't know of one specifically for horses.

  5. give them something else to play with... tie a empty milk carton to the ceilling with small twine/rope.

go to this website to find horse treats that you can make for your horses to keep them busy and chewing on this rather then a mane http://www.moniteausaddleclub.com/horse_...

    put them in different stalls..

let the arab and a horse who doesn't chew on him ( or just the arab) go out to the pasture and graze a few hours and then switch and let another horse.

that should help a little hopefully

  6. Braid it up and coat it with cayenne pepper, which you might already have in your kitchen.  It's VERY hot so horses won't tolerate it.

    Good luck!

  7. Dawn dish soap. It will taste like c**p! & Will not hurt anyone or thing. Your horse is needing a vitamin, it is missing something for your horse to be eatting the mane. Unless it is a youngster, then they are teething & need a toy!

  8. We use the same stuff for cribbers and wood chewers.  Its called McNasty.
