Anybody know what happened last night during the Dodgers/Cardinals game?

Question

I tuned in the game in the top of the 8th and a huge argument was just ending between Torre and the Umpires. Torre ended up protesting the game. I think it had to do with changing pitchers or something --- but the commentators didn't say. Anybody know what happened? BTW, Cardinals won and Albert Pujols hit a Grand Slam in the 4th - Whoo-hoo!

What happens if the protest goes through?

yah it was about torre trying to get a pinch hitter to the plate.  The pinch hitter(sweeney for kent) walked up to the plate, but they hadn't announced him yet, and when larussa went to make a pitching change to counter torre's morve, torre tried to pull the pinch hitter back since he wasnt announced yet.  but the umps ruled that the public announcer was at fault for not promptly announcing the pinch hitter, and he had to stay up and bat against the new pitcher.  This will not be overturned on a protest.

Also, i know a lot or stl fans will be looking at this question, does anyone know what night is student night at the funny bone in westport????thanks

Mark Sweeney was going to pinch hit for the pitcher, and he'd stepped into the batter's box. Jeff Kent came out to pinch hit as well. The umps had a talk on whether Sweeney was announced as the pinch hitter or not and decided that he was not announced, so the managers came out to clarify what had happened. That was awesome watching the slam last night, but the 'pen almost gave it away again....

Yeah ccfan said it right.  It was about the pinch hitter.  It took for ever to figure it out.     Pujols grand slam was sweet.  Plus Ludwick followed it with another solo shot.   Ludwick has tied the franchise record with 5 consecutive games with a home run.  I hope he breaks it tonight.   He is on fire right now.
