Question:

Anybody know where I can find technicalities for 7s rugby?

I am a prop, and have been playing a catch-run-maul/ruck game, and have been recently selected for a 7s tournament. As it requires much more speed, I was wondering if anyone had tips and, or, knew a website with working plans (i.e. what to ractise) or the technicalities of this sport.

thanks

  1. Number one tip - cardio FITNESS

Sevens is really hard on the lungs. You don't get the rest periods of scrum, lineout, handing onto mauls and off rucks etc in sevens, its all non-stop. So you must put in the miles.

"Fartlek" training is good as this type of training stresses both the aerobic and anaerobic which you need in 7's.

The following site gives some good tips on this:

    http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/fartlek....

    Other keys:

Speed obviously important, but basic skills such as passing (particularly out of contact) and catching are probably more important as possession is the key in sevens.

As a prop you will need to scrum in sevens too - it's completely different to 15-a-side, less technical and much shorter in terms of time. The ball is in and out - so work on practising wheeling the scrum (both on your own and opposition put in).

IRB rules for sevens can be found here too (worth a quick read): http://www.irb.com/NR/rdonlyres/5D619ADC...

  2. The bind of the scrum is also different.  Usually the props bind to the hooker in 15's, but in 7's the props bind to each other and the hooker binds to the props.  this allows for a quicker get-away.  Also the hooker must remember not to kick the ball strongly out of the scrum... they have to lightly kick it or hold it 8-man style on his foot for the scrum half- or else the ball will fly out unprotected.

Defense is the major difference in 7's because there's no second and/ or third line of defense.  Once there is a broken/ missed tackle... there usually is a score.  a flat  sliding defnese is necessary becasue if one person runs forward it leaves a huge gap.  I usually compare 7's defense to the little men on a fuseball table.  Everyone stays in their lanes, but slides to cover.  also if you are slower, stay in the middle of the field, keep the faster folks on the end and NEVER let anyone outisde your outside shoulder if you happen to be on the end of the line.  keep yourself between them and the out-of-bounds line... that way you will push them back into your defense and not give them a free lane to run down the touch  line.

NEver put more than 3 people in a  ruck/ maul.  especially if the other team is winning it- unless your are defending your try line @ the line.

Always talk defensively (i have the ball... going out, slide... advance)  and offensively. Offense is crazy- and should be crazy- lots more skipping, switching, looping- its all essential to try to overload.  but you have to talk to each other (on your right/ left/ pocket/ deep)

  3. well theres two props, wing prop and normal prop. basically it is like 15s but a lot harder u have free roam but passing is the key u must not run into contact. if ur a wing prop ull play right winger but also a prop for scrums and lineouts. another tip is n a scrum n if u arent on da refs side of the scrum especially if its their scrum, hold on 2 their prop for as long as u can get away with because if they have a move that extra second in the scrum could break them down
