There is a free gadget for Google called "Free Text Message".  Create an iGoogle page, add the gadget and text away!  I've used it many times and never had a problem with it!

I've been using the above site for over a year to get access to a number of FREE sms sends per day. The site is good and easy to use once you've setup your login and such.

There is a few ways to gain extra SMS sends, and a number of spam-like competitions. But if you just stay to the basic SMS sending function - works great, no cost and no spam ;)
