  1. Nine years ago I quit smoking by using Zyban, shortly after it came on the market. It worked like a charm. I previously tried gum (it took out fillings) and acupuncture, which didn't do any good. I smoked about a pack a day

  2. I personally prefer not to use medication.  Why not try other methods?  Like self hypnosis.

  3. Chantix is far and away the most effective med, in studies and in my experience. Three months, six if you need it (haven't stopped smoking by then.)

I also had good results with the Commit nicotine lozenges but they substituted a new and less harmful addiction for the old one -- Chantix gets you off nicotine entirely.

  4. I personally don't trust any quit smoking method that deals only with physical nicotine addiction. Drugs especially because they have many side effects and are potentially dangerous also. Honestly, I do not have much experience with quit smoking medication. I have read too many horror stories to even try them. All I know is that I and many others have managed to quit without taking the risk.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.

Medication is expensive, time consuming and potentially harmful. So much risk when all that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.
