  1. I am not sure that type of info would be on Ancestry.  But anyway, you need to be more specific.  When did he live/die?  Where is Cooperstown?  If he died recently, it is almost guaranteed he will not be on Ancestry.com.......certainly not the cause of death or the story behind it.  I never find that type of info on any of my ancestors.

Keep in mind, if you cannot post any additional information without violating any living person's privacy, then you can't post it.

  2. You can go to the town that he died in and ask to see his death certificate.  They are kept at the town/city hall.  We contacted a town hall on the other side of the country and they mailed copies of my great grandparents death certificates which obviously is the only place to find out exactly how he died.  Even if you look up the obituary, it won't say he was hung/shot/poisoned, etc.

  3. Need more information friend. Place of birth, Year of birth, Date of Death. Cooperstown.... which state/country? Parents names if possible. It is possible that even if he can be found on ancestry.com it may not list suicide as reason for death. Or there may not even be a Death Certificate. More info though and I will check for you.

  4. I worked at one time for a newspaper... obits were prepared by the funeral home (from info from family), then typed by me, at the paper. It was standard policy to omit any mention of suicide, if that is what happened, as a matter of respect for family feelings. It would be unusual to see it in any obituary. I have seen it RARELY in a news story.. but don't expect that.

The general standard is that such things are normally so traumatic to parents, spouses, so forth.. that it is left to their discretion to discuss, if they choose. It also is normal that death certificates will be limited to specific persons (next of kin).  If you have a close friend at the police or sheriff's dept.. they might be willing to look up the record for you.. but understand, if they did so, it is probably violating their rules.

  5. Nothing on Ancestry will give his cause of death. You could only find that on his actual death certificate, which isn't online. This appears to be him. If so, you could pull a copy of the obituary from the library and see what it says.
