Question:

Anyone Ride a SingleSpeed w/ a rear quick release?

I found an old Ross Gran Tour road bike recently and replaced some components including the wheels. The wheelset I picked up is quick release and I'm curious if anyone rides a singlespeed with a rear quick release? I haven't had any problems but I've only ridden it once with the new wheels. I know chain tension is important so I just thought I'd ask :) Cheers. Oh it does have a threaded axle if I wanted to use bolts.

  1. You already answered your own question, of course you can use the rqr on a single speed.  I am assuming you have a FIXED single speed.  You can get a solid axle of the right size and use nuts, but why bother unless you keep cranking down so hard on the pedals that the rear wheel keeps getting crooked in the forks.  Just make sure the quick release lever points to the rear when you tighten it down.  Have at least one working brake (front wheel) if it is a fixed gear, for safety.  I find a 68-72" gear works best for a fixed bike where the ground is mostly flat.

  2. Obviously you can.

  3. yes, no problem at all, i restored an old benotto and converted in to a fixed bike and it has old style quick release campy skewers.

  4. IMO QR is fine for SS and even fixed - They're incredibly strong things y'know.

Although I would recommend you replace the QR Skewer if it has an exposed cam - they're not as strong. I replaced my exposed cam skewer with a Shimano enclosed cam one as my rear horizontal dropouts are very slightly bent and I didn't want to risk the skewer slipping on the dropout.
