Question:

Anyone a vegan? Help!?

my family has decided recently to become vegan and it has been a pretty easy switch for me. The only issue I have been having is that I feel very tired and sluggish. I love to work out but I have been unable to keep up the pace that I normally do. Any suggestions? I just started a multivitamin, do I need anything else? And please don't say mean/dairy/eggs, this is not a joke.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Well, you may need more protein - which could be legumes or tofu, to sustain your blood sugar. Not everyone is cut out to be vegan.

  2. As the above said protein will do you good, plenty of pulses (chick peas etc) and tofu will help.

The multi-vitamin should do you good, but make sure you buy one designed for vegans/vegetarians as they contain the vitamins you lack from eating meat.

Iron will be very important in your diet, it can make you feel tired if you don't have enough. Its mainly found it red meat, so make sure your GDA is in the vitamin, and eat a large variety of vegetables to make sure your body doesn't get bored!

  3. Just eat things like tofu, veggie burgers, beans, soy milk, soy yogurt, etc. You just need extra protein, and that and a vitamin you will feel better in no time!!!

Good luck I hope I helped!

  4. I think you should be better and will notice a difference once your body becomes used to the multivitamin.

Keep in mind that you still want to strive to get your nutrition from food sources.

If you're not already eating high-protein foods, you should really start. That's the only way to keep energized at the gym. Tofu, quinoa and beans are all good sources of protein.

I actually drink protein shakes to help me with that (I weight train intensely a few times per week). Its good for muscle repair too.

Iron is also a key factor in feeling energetic. As women, we often feel this quickly if our diet is lacking it even a little bit. Load up on your dark green leafy veggies (collard greens, kale, spinach), raisins, apricots, nuts, and even blakstrap molasses.

Those are my suggestions. I hope it helps!

  5. I'm so tired of the old "you need more protein" cure all.  Most people consume way too much protein.  Are you getting enough whole grains and fiber?  Are you getting enough water and sleep?  These are the questions you should be asking yourself.  I also don't believe that you need a vitamin.  Just eat the whole foods raw, in their natural state.  When you eat an orange, you get the vitamin C along with the fiber and other nutrients at the correct balance your body can tolerate.  When you take a vitamin tablet, you are getting the synthetic vitamin and nothing else.  In fact, you're probably getting some gelatin in that vitamin tablet unless it's vegan.  When you do something major, like switch to a vegan diet, I believe that your body is detoxifying itself.  It will take a little time to adjust and you may feel poorly at first.  Stick it out and once you are detoxed, you will begin to feel great.  Also, if you can choose foods that are free of chemicals, preservatives, additives, etc that will be beneficial.  Look at the big picture for your health.  It's more than just your diet.  Like I said, are you getting enough sleep?  Water?  How is your mental or spiritual health?  It all comes together.  Good luck and stick to it.

  6. Maybe eat a little more than you normally do and eat lots of protein and whole wheat grains. I am a vegan and I feel like that too sometimes. I think it happens to everyone, not just vegans.
