Anyone bake cupcakes as birthday cake?

Instead of a birthday cake, I wanna bake cupcakes as the birthday cake for my mum in law. But after blowing the candles, do you think I should ask her to cut the cake still?

My daughter gets them for each of my grandkids' birthday parties. They even make them at local grocery store bakeries. The cupcakes are all pushed together, and then frosted on top like one cake. Just pull them apart to serve them:) .....Or, you can buy a cupcake tree (Michaels, or other craft store) and stack them on there...
