Anyone been in a car accident?

I'm really shaken up because I'm young (18) and was in a car accident earlier today (my fault unfortunately because I'll admit I'm not the greatest with intersections.. so basically I pulled in front of a guy as I tried to make a left turn while he was coming straight in the opposite direction). This isn't really a question, but I'm just really shaken up. Have any of you been in one? How'd you deal with it?

  1. I know how you feel. I have been in several (some my fault, some not) and they are pretty scary. I dealt with them by learning what I could have done different to avoid something similar in the future. I have also learned that driving takes ALL of your attention. If you have a hard time focusing all your attention on driving and what is around you, turn off the radio, don't talk on the phone and don't hold conversations with passengers while driving. you are only 18 so you have a lot to learn, so don't beat yourself up too much.

Please remember that driving is a privilege and not a right. Also remember that we are all driving potentially deadly weapons.

Another thing that might help is getting a "learn to drive" manual out of the library and reviewing it. It helped me.

  2. Thats rough.  You should be greatful.  assuming the other guy was o.k., you chaulk this up to experience.  I wrecked a lot of cars when I was younger (Im about 10 years older than you) but I was t-boned by a truck while on a motorcylce in 2006 and almost lost my leg.  You gotta keep things in perspective.  Sure, you f!@##d up your car and maybe you got a ticket; but your OK!  Your shaken up, but it will pass.  Luckily cars are pretty safe now-a-days.  Just keep things in perspective.  thats my advice.

    Hope I helped.

  3. i had one a few years back, where i was turning onto a side street, had my signal on, and the lady SPEEDING behind me decided at that moment to look down and take a bite of her sandwich. her steering wheel ended up in my back seat, and i ended up in the hospital for cracked ribs and a broken collarbone (darn airbag).  it was rough, it was my first car, but i was alive and she had no serious injuries. once the lawsuit i set on her was settled, i bought myself a nice NEW car and moved on. that's about the only thing you can do in a situation like this...
