Anyone been on a Western Carribean cruise with Carnival?

Going on a five day with one day stop in Cozumel and one day in Progresso. Is it worth paying for the ship sponsored excursions? Or is it safe enough and practical enough to hop a cab when we get there to take us to the local beach, restaurants, etc? We aren't interested in doing scuba, ATV, etc. Just more interested in relaxing, shopping, etc. Thanks!!!

  1. Haven't been to Progresso, but have been to Cozumel three times on cruises.

In Coz, it's very easy to go out on your own.  You need to be sure to watch the time and make sure you get back to the ship at the required time - otherwise, they will not wait for you.  You can grab a cab to the beaches [I would recommend Chankanaab - check out their website] and cabs are usually waiting to take you back.  The shopping is right downtown, and you may even be docked right there [there are three piers in Coz].  Shopping may be a hassle there, both due to aggressive shopkeepers and the number of ships in port with you.

To get lots of info about your ports and your cruise, go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then "Ports of Call", etc.

    Have a great time!
