  1. yep.... for east coast is actually decent!  not comparable to whistler/blackcomb or mammoth but decent!

  2. the hill faces southeast but due to some wierd  Al Gore climate mess-up the wind always seems to blow right into your face when you're skiing whiteface. Mad River and Sugarbush is just a short hop, skip and jump away and you'll probably like it awhole lot more.

  3. Sorry Andy, I have to dsagree, MRG and Sugarbush aren't quite "a short hop". It's a 2.5 hour drive from Lake Placid to Waitsfield (if you know the dirt roads it might be a bit shorter) and you have to either go North through St.Albans or South to Crown Point and over Middlebury Gap because the ferry might not be running. Even then...the ferry is slow.

Anyway....I have a love-hate relationship with Whiteface. It definitely has some stellar runs, I can't argue with that. Mid-week is usually better because of less crowds and some of the slopes that might be being used for racing are open to the public. Every time I've gone on weekends there were always 1 or 2 races going on, thus closing down some good runs.

I find it icy most of the time, but I've never skied it right after a fresh dump either. The best time I was there was mid-March. It was loose granular for the most part. Some ice, but not as much as the times I had been there in February.

Overall, I think it's good for a day...maybe a day and a half if you are an expert skier. Novices and Intermediates could probably ski there for several days and not get bored.

If you are traveling from NYC to the 'Daks, I'd go to Gore instead. I always have a better time there. If you are coming from Quebec...go to Jay.
