I was in Forte dei Marmi swimming in the sea when I stepped on a fish that then stung me between my toes. The locals called it "Raganella" but when I googled that I found that "raganella" is Italian for Tree Frog. Can anyone tell me the real name for this fish? The locals said it is about 3 to 4 inches long (although one guy said it was no longer than his thumb) and has a spike on the end of its tail. I just want to see what it looks like. The closest thing I've found is the Weaver fish but it doesn't live off Italy, only the UK, or so I've read.

  1. Although "raganella" is by large used for "tree frog", there actually is a fish also called that way: the common Italian name is "tracina" and is the most venomous fish in the Mediterranean. The scientific name is Trachinus Vipera

  2. I hate to break this to you, but a Raganella is a tree frog, and usually they are about an inch long (give or take a little).

I'm not certain what bit you, I can't even begin to fathom it, but I'll send an email to my uncle who is a longtime fisherman and I'll see if this gets any different results.
