Question:

Anyone been to Capri?

Me and my girlfriend are considering going to Capri from Sorrento for a few days... never been, but I'm a little unsure of how we get to our hotel in the Capri. I don't speak italian, but keep hearing about the Funicular.. is this a raliway? chairlift?

Do people speak english?

At arrival from the boat from Sorrento where do I go? I hear I have to get a porter to carry my luggage - where do I find them?

Then where do I go to get some transport to the hotel? Where do I buy a ticket?

Is it a lot easier than it sounds? I'm used to just grabbing a taxi lol!

Any tips from other first timers??

  1. haven't been there yet and would avoid it during the crowded season.

  2. The funicular is just a cliff railway up the hill from Marina Grande, where the boats arrive to capri town. Get tickets at the booth to your right as you walk out of the harbour (one euro per trip). If you are booked in to a hotel pick up a taxi (open top!) at Marina Grande or use the small buses. Tickets from the booth at the harbour can be used for single trips on any bus or on the funicular. Warning; Capri town is expensive, a small beer in the main square will cost 7 euros, but the main street is full of designer shops if that is what you are after. If you are booked in to a good hotel porters from that hotel can be waiting for you at Marina Grande and they take your luggage on little electric carts. Language is OK, English is widely spoken.

  3. i live in italy and have been to both place they are very nice. A funicular is a little train like think that goes up and down the side of a mountain. Most people in Sorrento speak english so that is not a problem. You dont have to get a porter to carry your stuff and to be honest I really wouldnt because they usally will take off with your stuff. For example. You and your girlfriend get into the taxi and the porter is standing behindthe car it looks like they are putting your stuff in the tunck but then they reallyt dont so make sure you watch them. You should be able to get a taxi and take it to the hotel. They would be at the port when you come it. If you need to get a ticket for the Funicular you can get them when youget to station. I could help you more possibly if you let me know what hotel,

  4. It's very beautiful, a truly stunning Island, though beware it's mega busy - The Funicular is the rail that up  to the top of the Island and you get breathtaking views. I would suggest booking a hotel before you go as it's not that big a place and i assume would get very busy. I stayed in Amalfi which is also beautiful and took a day trip across.  Many of the people have a command of English and are very friendly and helpful.

One tip once up on the top walk around to the other part of the Island and down to the other side if you see what i mean, it has a few restaurants and stunning views and is a lot quieter as for some reason many people just stay at the real tourist bit.

  5. Yeah, I've been. Its beautiful. Its a small island so you would have to get a boat from Sorrento over. I don't think you'll need to get the Funicular which is a sort of chairlift, as the hotels were all right on the sea front, the higher levels of the island were private homes. There is a fair amount of english spoken, but I don't really think you'll need a porter as its quite a small island, taller than it is wide. as to transport, when I went, i saw a few buses, but it was mostly cars, certainly no trains etc. hope this helps, do a search on capri and you'll find out more.

  6. went on a day trip from Naples.

The funicular is just like a cable car up the steep cliff - it saves you a lot of walking! yes people speak english, butits nice to say hello and thank you in italian if you can manage a few words.

Capri is quite small. You can easily ask for directions, someone will point you the right way.

  7. Yes, I've been there, amazing Island.

I suggest you to stay in Sorrento, it's full of Americans and not so expensive.

    This is funicolare:

  8. I live in Italy and have been to Capri several times. The information in the previous posts is only partially correct.

You need to know which town on Capri the hotel is in. The ferries arrive at Marina Grande. There are hotels here, but they aren't the only ones on the island. The funicular is a rail line up the mountain from Marina Grande to the town of Capri. The entrance to the funicular should be obvious when you've gotten off the boat.  You could also take the bus; you'll see the stop above the beach when you get there. There are a lot of hotels in Capri. A key reference point for getting around the town is the Piazetta. It's the main square very close to the funicular station in Capri.

There is also another town, Anacapri, which you can reach by bus. The chairlift goes from Anacapri to the top of the mountain where there are great views and some Roman ruins.

When you arrive at whichever town your hotel is in, you'll have to carry your bags. There will also be porters at the funicular station.

This is much easier than it all sounds. English is widely spoken - it's a major tourist destination. Enjoy the limoncello!

These sites have maps & useful information; many of the hotels have directions on how to reach them, but people there can help with directions too: http://www.isle-of-capri.net/capri_eng.p... and http://www.capri.com/en/index

  9. I sailed past it recently.  It's not very big.  You can walk.
