  1. Hi Emma, I'm come from Palermo and if you like, we can meet  eachother for a coffee

  2. It's more of a historic place to visit. If you'll like to really see the beaches, you'll have to visit places like San Vito Lo Capo, Castelamare del Golfo and Selinunte to name a few in Trapani province which is not too far from Palermo.

  3. It's a wonderful city, The Cathedral, Martorana, Palatine Chapel, Monreale Dome, amazing!

    The beaches are FANTASTIC!!!!

The best one is Mondello (7 km from Palermo)

    Enjoy :-)

  4. I fell in love with Sicily. Was based in Catania, but travelled all over. I was with a group, and our guide put the fear of God into us about Palermo, so much so that I was expecting muggers to jump out of every doorway. So, doubtless there are dodgy parts, as there are in many cities, and you need to take care you are sensible, don't flash any valuables.

It's very much a proper working city, rather than a resort, but the history is obvious and it's definately worth seeing. Go to the catacombs and see rows and rows of embalmed bodies in, for example, the type of uniform that's on the Quality St tin (tall hat & gold stripes across). Completely bizarre.

The place I liked best in Sicily was Taormina. I would recommend that you base yourself there, if at all possible. I would definately if I went back. It's a lovely scenic resort, beautiful but set up for holidays, which Palermo isn't really. There's a pedestrianised area with nice shops & clubs, a Roman amphitheatre, and of course Mt Etna nearby.

The Sicilian people are great; very proud, but friendly if you make the effort. I loved the scenery, the historical sights, the lovely food, (many small hotels grow their own veg & herbs, and make their own pasta) and the lemons everywhere - they have five crops per year, the weather is so good!

  5. When I arrived in Palermo it was a GREAT surprise: I found an wonderful city, so go and you'll have a very nice holiday.

  6. I live in Palermo. The beach is at Mondello which is 10km on the bus, this beach is fine except for in July and August when it's too crowded. Any other time it is brilliant. Having said that, obviously in the MED the water isn't really warm except from May to October. Thanks - David, also davpal2@hotmail.com

PS If anyone speaks english we have an english conversation club here in palermo, willing to help anyone, or if you want to meet up with local people... it's completely free http://speakenglish.vze.com

  7. A very interesting place and extremely historic place, but it isn't a beach resort. I'm sure there is some sort of beach there - in much the same way there is probably a beach at Southampton,  Grimsby or Hartlepool! Sicily in general is a lovely island and I expect you will find some nice beaches not too far away.

  8. No but going to Malian next week
