  1. In Rome get up early and start your day at the Vatican and at least do the Vatican Museum tour including the Sistine Chapel; while your there see St. Peters too.  Also, spend at least a morning or afternoon at the Colesseum and ruins that are right there (I believe both close around 5 pm.)  Other must sees are the Spanish steps (go in the evening and have gelato) and the Pantheon.  You may also want to start with city tour to give you a pretty good overview.  There are truely lots to see here.

In Milan see the Cathedral (one of the largest in the world) and La Scala.  Keep in mind that in Rome there are a lot of English speaking people, in Milan we didn't find many that spoke English (our waiters and cab drivers didn't speak English in Milan.)

  2. Wow, whirlwind tour!  You'll probably want to see the major sights in Rome, like the Colosseum, the Vatican Museum (the Sistine Chapel is amazing), St. Peter's Basilica to see the Pieta.

Milan--The Duomo and La Scala.  The Central Station is impressive.

  3. It's going to be tough because there's so much to see.  I'm guessing with your short itinerary that you'll be taking a tour or train through those parts.

First, get a good guide book like Rick Steve's.  It'll tell you everything you need to know and experience.  My second favorite book is Lonely Planet's Blue Book, which is a listing of the cool bars, restaurants, and events going on.

Build an itinarary that'll allow you to see the most popular destination, like the Colloseum, Pantheon, and the Vatican.  Since you have only two days, do an ancient Rome around the Forum/Colloseum area and have dinner around the Pantheon.  My favorite lunch place is just off the Pantheon, east, called Miscellenea.  It's a college bar/cafe that has a listing of colleges that have dined there though study aboard students.  It's cheap, but very home and fun.  Mikki, the owner is a hoot!  Have the second day to tour the Vatican City, the museum, Sistine Chapel, and maybe get some Holy Water too.  You have have dinner near the Campo or Jewish Quarter which is rustic and interesting.

Since you'll be in Milan for half a day, try to get reservations at the church with the Last Supper.  I forget the name.  Unfortunately, I've never been to Milan, but if you'll only be there she the most important thing.  Don't forget, you're in Milan.  Excellent shopping!.

Enjoy your trip.  Don't try to do too much, the best part of Italy is strolling along with a gelato in your hand.  Ciao!

  4. in rome, head to the vatican.  if you go to the vatican museums around lunch time, your wait will be less.  also, dont forget st. peters, try to go in the evening since there will be less people and make the experience better.  take a tour of the colosseum, amazing.  try to plan your trip to rome a little in advance.  figure out what you must see and what to see with time.  you should be able to hit quite a bit.  plan your sightseeing so you go from one side of the city to another.  try not to end up going back and forth since that wastes time.  also, invest in a 24 hour subway pass, it will save you walking time if you need to get a to somewhere that is a far walk, quick.

  5. A very nice guide to Rome (with Interactive maps and all) is by Fonisol.com

The bars and restaurants are marked on the maps. They also have a blog for Rome events for the week, accessible from the site (guide).
