I may have to travel to the Yopal region in Colombia for a visit of 5-8 days. I have checked out the foriegn office web site and even though they warn against many parts of Colombia, Yopal compartment (region) was not mentioned. Does anyone have any experience of Yopal area...is it safe?

Thanks

  1. Yopal itself is safe - actually, a very nice and surprisingly clean city, especially after the madhouse and bustle of Bogota. Go, have a great time.

If you are traveling there by car or bus, by all means travel early in the day. Travel at night can be dangerous. Its about 230 miles from Bogota. Personally, I would fly Aeronaves and spend my time enjoying the city and taking day trips from it.

Wish I could go with you - I miss Colombia.

  2. I have not been to yopal, but have been to Bogota and felt completely safe.  I also went out on a day trip out of the city (about 2 hours or so) to Tunja Colombia and was fine.  They (our hosts) defintly wanted us to leave their before night fall, as we still had a drive through the country side to go.  But as long as you are smart and are not traveling by yourself out at night you should be fine.  I was there for a week and never felt fearful of anything.
