  1. Unfortunately, due to the length of the crossing, P&O ferries do NOT accept pets on the Portsmouth to Bilbao crossing.

You do have the option of taking them from Dover to Calais & driving down from there, but you would probably need to allow yourself two days to get there, in comfort.  The shorter drive, if you decided to send the dogs by air, would certainly be from the port of Santurtzi (Bilbao).  To Mazarron, the distance is about 852 kms (528 miles), almost entirely on motorways, and would take about 8hrs 15 mins.

Of course, the cheapest alternative of the lot would be flying, with many low cost airlines now serving Alicante, in particular, and Murcia airports.   You might consider hiring a vehicle there, if you are only going to explore the possibility of purchasing.

Whatever you decide good luck and have provided a route from Santurtzi to Mazarron, should you decide that appeals to you.

Addition - Have checked the Plymouth to Santander sailing, which is around 10 hours shorter than the P&O sailing, and they allow up to 2 pets per vehicle.  The Brittany site with a link to questions (where you will find "Taking my pet abroad") is below -

  2. I used to live there until a couple of years ago,,very nice place ,,,loved it,,Southampton to Bilbao is a fine crossing of about 30 hours and a drive of about 13 hours from Bilbao to Puerto,,,but it does take you through Madrid on the motorway but the turning on your right is well signposted,,have fun,,just make sure you turn of to Granada just before Murcia city otherwise you will drive right into the city centre,,,look out for the Granada right hand turning and keep going for about 30 miles before turning left into Mazzaron and the port,,,,I know many people there and many of the bar and restaurant owners,,you will enjoy the town,,just try to mix in with the locals they were some of the nicest people I have ever met
