if so, can you please tell me about it, what its like, what the locals are like, which is the best resort to go to, what the weather is like, when is the best time to go. me and my fella are going on holiday next year but we dont want a too slushy romantic getaway. we need somewhere with nightlife as at the time i will be 19 and he will be 18 and i thought santorini may be nice. any opinions welcome.

  1. Yes I've been! very nice!

Locals very Greek like...generally friendly and happy to take your money! Santorini has a typical mediterranean climate with mild winters, pleasantly warm springs and autumns and very hot summers - 40C in the shade not uncommon!

Best time to go either may-June or September-October as the weather is still hot but not too hot and the water is warm to swim in...and also it's not much fun in august walking around santorini - there's not much shade anywhere and it can be very uncomfortable!

Oia is the prettiest town up in the north west corner but it is also the most expensive....many very wealthy rich people go there!

Thira - the island capital is very lively in the evenings and is also pretty like Oia. Otherwise for cheaper, try the other side of the island....and 1 piece of advice....get somewhere with a swimming pool cos you're gonna appreciate it on those hot days!

  2. Santorini is georgeous. If you like wandering round narrow streets and the picture postcard greek villages, this is the place for you. Lively enough, but nowhere near as commercialised or touristy as other Greek islands.

It's a small island (you can probably drive from one end to other in 30mins). Main town is Thira on west coast. I've stayed in Oia before on the north coast which is a bit smaller. A must for sunsets (Oia that is).

In terms of nightlife it's going to more chilled out bars and tavernas than nightclubs. Most Greeks don't go out until 10pm ish and stay out until the early hours.

I'd advise on hiring a car to spend time around all the island. From memory the beach at Perissa is about the only sandy beach on the island although i could be wrong about that.
