Question:

Anyone build a cardboard boat?

My town is having a contest to build a boat out of cardboard and race it around a short course. The only material you can use is cardboard, with glue, tape, paint and wax. Anyone ever build one, or have any plans/ideas on how to do this. All answers appreciated.

  1. Hopefully your voyage will be better than the Titanic!!

  2. Your first option is to go to a appliance store and request a refrigerator box. Then it's a matter of waterproofing which is where the wax comes in and a lot of it. Get the kids involved and rub 'till your arms feels like they are going to fall off.

If two box's can be aquired, make your craft longer, not wider by overlapping one into the other and tape like crazy at the seams. There is usually pieces of "U" shaped cardboard in the box, use those to reienforce the floors and walls and again tape like crazy. U basicly need to create ribs inside the box, the more the better. Shape them like this > _/T\_ and I guarentee a rigid craft that will endure several hours of exposure.

One tip on waxing, melting the wax in a double boiler and painting it on the exterior will be quicker but it won't stick as well unless you first vigorously rub in a first layer.

Have fun and invest some time for a safe and durable craft.
