Anyone buy bikes from bikesdirect.com?

The bikes there look like a steal. Anyone had any experience with the amount of assembly needed, shipping time, quality, customer relations, and/or satisfaction? Any experience with them would help me immensely. Thanks.

  1. Hey There!

M R is right. My dad got a road bike from bikes direct for $1200. It was the highest-end Motobecane Champion. It came with complete Dura-Ace components and a carbon fork and seat post. Everything else was steel but at an amazing 16 pounds. I have a Kestrel Evoke 2007 full carbon with Ultegra and it is around 18 pounds and i got it for $2000 with a discount. So the bike from bikes direct had a good price. We thought there had to be a catch so once it shipped to us in about 3 weeks, i assembled it. I am a pretty good bike mechanic at only 18 and it took me around an hour without interruptions to get it built and another 30 minutes to adjust the derailers, brakes, handlebars etc... Once we rode it I couldn't believe it. It was an awesome bike. I'm not someone who needs to have a name brand bike so i was extremely happy we got it even if it wasn't mine. Whenever we go ride we always call it "the good bike." We were so satisfied with the bike that my dad got me the motobecane dual suspension mtb from them a couple months ago. I would definitely consider getting a bike from them.

As for what size to get, i don't really know I am 5'7" at 146lbs and i have a size 52. I love it and it feels right but sometimes i think i should have gotten a size 50 so i could get a better response when i decide to accelerate. Maybe  52 would be perfect for you but try going to a local shop to get fitted with a bike you have and ask them for your measurements. I don;t know if they will give them to you but it's worth a try because the best bike is a bike that fits.

    Hope I helped. Keep Pedaling!

  2. A couple friends have purchased from them. All are happy with them. I put one together and it was fine. I believe they actually describe what has to be done right on the site. The bikes come as they would to any bike shop. Ft wheel, brake, handlebars, stem, pedals, saddle, post etc need to be installed. The bike needs a tune and wheels touched up etc. It took me about 4 hours at a leisurely pace to assemble and tune. In a shop (I used to own one) it'd be about 1.5 hour assembly.

The purchase and shipping were fast and easy.

As far as size, well that's not as simple as that. It depends on the type of bike, how you intend to ride it, your leg length, arm length etc. I will say I'm 5-8 and ride a 52cm. It's possible a 54 may fit less likely a 50 would but ya never know.
