Hi Everyone,

I am new to the site. Wondering if anyone has designed a craft room recently, i am an avid crafter and have decided to dedicate one of the rooms in my house to my hobbie. Want to get the layout right and wondered if anyone could give me some advice on this? Thanks.

  1. Im in the same position however I have a very small area to work on. I generally use a pasting table as a work area as this is cheap and can be moved if needed for a spare room. I would also suggest using only one wall for storage if you can for the same reason unless you already have another spare room. The best storage I think is a wall of shelves as these are more economic with space and you can buy pretty baskets, boxes or magazine files etc to store craft. Im a painter so a simple grid made with ply holds canvasses. I also love the ply boxes from Ikea which are excellent for storing odds and ends needed and you can decorate them easily and label as required. It is also nice to have the walls painted a neutral magnolia so an everyday picture can be removed and your craft can be hung or displayed on a table. Chest of draws also accommodate lots of the bulky items but can conceal things quickly if needed to.

  2. download google sketchup and have a play around on that

  3. We have a potting shed as an art room, quite a small area so had to be careful about layout.I don`t know what sort of crafts you`re doing, but I try to work on the kitchen design rule of the triangle of most used items. All the tools you use the most should be near your work surface and you should have very little movement to pick up and return them.

Position your work surface in the best possible light, obvious,I know, but don`t forget when winter comes and you`ve no natural light.

The other thing we always take care of,storage.Anything that may be affected by temperature, light, moisture, they can all ruin your materials. I hope you get as much enjoyment from your craft room as we do from ours.

  4. both my aunt and myself have craft rooms, and all i can say is a massive table, which you can also store things under and move easily, (mine is a huge peice of wood on a shelf..) flooring that you're not too precious about, (lino is usually best, easy to clean) and shelves.. i've got white walls, best for just painting over if i need a background, and i'm in a cellar, so i've not much light but can control the light for photography work, but a massive black-out curtain, so you can control the light should you need to. oh, and extention chords; the sockets always seem to be just 3 inches too far away... i guess it does depend on what craft you will be doing.

make a list of all the things that annoy you at the moment about the space you currently have and improve =)
