Question:

Anyone drink a protein shake or anything?

I'm terrible, I know. I've been stressed this past year, and honestly I've never been good with my diet, even when I ate meat (though... I'll confess it's probably easier to grab a burger and get my protein than hunt down lentil soup on the run, you know?).

I am concerned about my nutrition. I take a multivitamin, but aside from that I'm terrible.

Pleas don't treat me as a troll bashing the vegetarian diet. I'm sure it's super-healthy when you do it properly, but unfortunately I don't think I'm very good at that.

Any super EASY tips for getting all I need?

*sigh*

Is there any help for me? I'm serious, you're talking to someone who half the time has to remember to eat, and the other half of the time is focused more on taste than nutrition.

I'm particularly concerned about protein I guess.

  1. Well being a post-gastric bypass patient, I have been on the search for a protein drink that I like. I haven't found one yet. One thing I do like are the Special K protein add-ins for water. I love the taste of their pink lemonade. Gives a lovely feel for the summer season. It's easy because you just add it to your bottle of water wherever you are. It gives you about 5g of protein. It's not a lot, but it sure does help.

I also like the Nestle No Sugar Added Breakfast Drinks, they are blue, and now come in to-go bottles. I would suggest refrigerating them first and shaking them well. I like these ones because they taste like chocolate milk and are low enough in sugar for me to have.

I'm just like you =). I have to remember to eat, always on the go, more concerned about taste...but I have to remind myself that I have to put my health needs first. Take time to schedule a break for yourself in your daily schedule...and I mean actually writing it in to your agenda if you have to. You need to take better care of yourself =). You deserve the best, so why stop yourself from getting the best?

Best of luck in finding something you like =D

  2. First of all, if you're eating reasonably healthy foods most of the time, you're probably getting enough protein.  Whole grains have a good bit of protein.

However, if you're feeling weak or tired, and think protein might be the problem, a protein shake is a great idea.  Protein powder can seem expensive, but generally once you buy it, it lasts a long time.  Once you have it, you can mix it straight with soy milk or juice (which isn't all that tasty, but it will give you the protein and is really quick and easy), or you can make smoothies.  You can also buy pre-made smoothies with protein powder at a lot of places (Jamba Juice, some Whole Foods, Coldstone if you're not vegan, etc.), which is more expensive, but probably not a lot more than a meal at a fast food place.  Odwalla also has two protein shakes (and so do other juice brands such as Naked).

Fake meat products can also give you some extra protein on busy days, if you have ten minutes to prep food.  You could also try a higher-protein breakfast cereal (Ezekiel has some, for example, mine has 8g of protein per serving, plus the 7g or so from the added soy milk), and you can snack on soy yogurt (or regular if you're not vegan) or nuts.
