  1. hi

my brother lives there and I was there in February.  I always heard it to be in the jungle, isolated, etc, etc, so I went with low expectations. Well, I have to tell you that I was impressed. Yes, it is isolated because it is far from other major cities in Brazil, but it is very historic and interesting.  I have been to many large cities in Brazil (and the world) and found it to be dotted by contrasts of modernity, poverty, potential, and cultural mix, and a sense of new and upcoming development - much like being it's been raised out of the dirt by the state's rich natural resources because you will see modern tall buildings along side abandoned lots, right downtown sometimes.  The airport is small but good, I had only good experiences there. There are 3 very large modern shopping centers, beautiful parks where people go jogging, the grocery stores are huge, but food prices are high because much comes from far away - so cost of living is higher than in most brazilian cities.  Their countryside is beeeeeautiful, they have rocky canyons to one direction and wetlands to another, exhibiting amazing flora and fauna. It is HOT there, over 90 to 100 degrees most days of the year.  I would definitely go back, it is an amazing place and the people seemed very nice too. My daughter had to have an emergency surgery there and the hospital staff was great and very professional.
