  1. I had a root filling a while ago. I had a crown fitted after. First off he gave me an injection which doesn't hurt. It's just a feeling of pressure, and then my mouth went numb. It felt better than I remember (maybe they've improved things) because my mouth didn't actually feel properly numb, not until I touched it anyway. I kept panicking coz I thought he was going to start drilling it before the anaesthetic was working- see I was panicking too! I don't know why people assume the dentist would be that stupid, they're very qualified, and would be promptly sacked if they did that.

The noise of the drill wasn't as loud as I remember it either. All you can feel is something hard scraping on your tooth and a slight buzzing, you have no idea how much he's doing, and there's no pain at all. Then when he stops you feel your tooth and it's all empty! Once the nerves been drilled away you wouldn't be able to feel it anyway, coz the tooth is dead so you can relax then. Then I seem to remember him sticking little metal pins into each root and taking an xray.

I can't remember much else, I think before he drilled he took an impression of my tooth so my crown could be made. Honestly the worst bit is afterwards when you're waiting for the numbness to go. And before, when you're in so much pain! The abcess I had prior to having the filling was agony. Just go for it, and be brave. But don't grit your teeth!

The worst that could happen is that the aneasthetic may be a tiny bit weak in one spot and start to feel a slight ache. But you're not going to feel sudden agonising pain, it would be impossible. If you felt anything just say and the dentist will quickly give you another injection.

  2. I have had 2 and it didn't hurt at all, either during or after.

  3. it's not that bad, and he/she will give lots of prescription drugs. don't be scared.

  4. I hate the dentist aswell, cry and shake everytime, locked myself in the loo one time! Im a major chocoholic so that doesnt do much good to my teeth!

I was in pain aswell, putting the dentist off for ages, putting stinky clove oil on my tooth to numb it, but after passing out in the middle of a 1 minute silence in a packed hall I eventually went to the dentist. I needed a root filling aswell.

For me they rubbed a minty gel onto my gum before injecting the anasthetic, might be worth asking for that. You can't feel pain because of the anasthetic, the whole side of my face went numb!

It does take a while, basically they drill out the inside of the tooth down into the root and fill it in. The drilling is the worst bit, but the anasthetic means you can't feel any pain, the filling bit afterwards is fine, feels like cotton wool being pushed into your tooth, doesn't hurt nothing to worry about. Sorry if you didn't want to know that, but i find when im worried at the dentist I want to know exactly whats going on in my mouth.

It will stay numb for a few hours after that and will probably  ache afterwards but there will be no more pain!

Hope this helps, and good luck for the filling!
