Question:

Anyone else think its stupid?

There are so many products that get recalled because of things that are the parents fault instead of the manufacturer's and it really bugs me! Like bath seats getting recalled because babies have drowned. Or walkers being recalled because they fell down stairs... or I just saw something about a bumbo...

It seems to me that all these things would not have been an issue if the children were properly supervised...

So, does anyone else think its stupid that the manufacturer gets blamed?!?

  1. I agree with you on that one

  2. I agree that it is stupid that some people need the obvious spelled out for them, but we live in a time of stupid people. They blame their stupidity on others, because how could they possibly be at fault? They are too stupid to realize that they are to blame for their own choices.

Stupid lawsuits like these started with MacDonalds coffee. Remember that one? She burned her leg when she put the hot coffee between them and it spilled. Then sued because she got burned by hot coffee. DUH!  Isn't she the one that ordered and paid for the cup of HOT coffee? Stupid. It caused all coffee cups to have a warning, Caution contents are hot. Really? Isn't that the point.

  3. The best so far has been the 'Bumbo' chairs being recalled so they could put a label on them telling the Parents not to set the baby in the 'Bumbo' chair on top of the coffee table (because some lady stuck her baby IN the bumbo chair while it was sitting on the coffee table and the baby fell out.)

I think most of it is common sense, which sadly, some Parents lack! I think the best thing to do is try to figure out how to put warning labels on the babies before they even come out of the uterus ... or just send us home with an instruction booklet .. =]

  4. Hmmm..makes me think of the woman who won millions of $$$$ from McDonald's for getting burned by hot coffee.  Do you really need to be told that a hot cup of coffee is hot?!?!?!?!?!?

  5. your right. but i guess manufacturers are going to have to start putting OBVIOUS warning labels on their products because some people are just that stupid

  6. Yeah, it's pretty dumb. I know I read that thing about the bumboo getting a notice put on it about not leaving it on tables or elevated surfaces because it could tip over and the baby could fall...duh??? Just because some parents do that doesn't mean we're all going to. I don't think they should be recalled, it's just common sense.

  7. I guess Voltaire was right when he said "Common sense is not so common."

I think maybe the hospitals should come up with a common sense test to screen the parents. LOL.

Maybe all childrens toys should come out with a label that says "NOT TO BE USED AS A BABYSITTER".

Some people... it's stupid sometimes, but it's a nice laugh!

  8. it's sad the lack of common sense in the world.  I saw someone mention sueing McDonalds over spilled coffee.  What about the parents in NY who wanted to sue them for their children being obese?  I think a lot of the parent-induced re-calls are so companies can cover their tails and don't end up spending months in court for peoples stupidities.  I just saw a bed that was shaped like a boat that was re-called because an 18 month old got his head caught in the bow that opened up as a toy box- the poor child suffocated, so where was the adult supervising the child?

With my first son I was on bed rest and did all my nursery/layette shopping on line.  The hard part was reading through all the reviews of items.  A lot of it came down to common sense and peoples coordination.  I'd see the most amazing stroller with the best reviews and then you'd get someone who was to uncoordinated to s***w a wheel into the frame and they'd leave a scathing review.  Stupid if you ask me.

I think companies should start stating the category in which an item is recalled.

    - manafacturers defect

    - hazardous materials

    - user error (aka- some dumb a s s ruined it for everyone)

    :)

  9. Re:  "NOT TO BE USED AS A BABYSITTER"

    Well said.

  10. The crib my daughter has got recalled because the parents put the locks for the rail on upside down, so the rail did not lock, the baby grabed it or something, and fell out of the bed.  I agree, a lot of the things that do get recalled are from parents mistakes, however I have seen some things get recalled because of the manufacturer.

  11. A lot of the things like the bath seats, walkers and Bumbo's are recalled so the manufacturer can put labels on them to warn other parents to properly supervise the baby while the product is being used. They're not being recalled never to be released again just so they can have warning labels put on them.

  12. When you mentioned recalls, I think of defective products, like car seats not staying buckled or playpens with dropped sides. I hadn't thought of recalls because of parents not watching their child closely.

  13. yes yes instruction booklet, better yet a 24 hour hotline. unfortunately people are not all born with common sense so yea its confusing on why certain products are on the recall list, and of course you dont want to buy it if its on the recall list just in case, so you may miss the chance to get  really good item.

  14. not a parent one but my favorite was a women suing McDonald's for spilling hot coffee on her lap. SHe was driving and put the coffee between her legs and spilt it and burned her legs. That is why they say "caution: Hot Coffee"

If I remember it correctly that's how it went. People just get do something EXTREMELY stupid and then blame it on someone else. I think it's in California where they are trying to make a law that if a lawyer files a frivolous law suit they can get disbarred.

  15. I agree, except with the Bumbo.  My baby got one as a Christmas present a year and a half ago and I sat him in it on the floor when I was sitting right next to him.  The whole thing fell over.  I threw it away.  Maybe they've changed the design in the last year and a half since that happened, but I don't think I'd ever trust one of those things again.

But for other things like you've described, yeah, it's the parent's fault.
