Anyone else wonder WHY they give away 3 free newspapers in London?

they can make a living doing it from the advertising they sell. The news is not the real point of the paper!

It's ad $$ plus it keeps people informed as to just what is going on there. England is $$ and it's exp to even buy a paper!

The papers are mainly for job vacancies and adverts although some of them give fairly comprehensive local and world news.  In fact, some are better than the papers you buy.  I just wish people were more caring to the environment when they finish with them.

Its all about advertising!

If you read carefully you can see that the 'stories' and 'news' put across certain ideas and lifestyles. A good example being the home/entertainment features, which are really full page adverts for products dressed up as something else!

Metro is given out across the whole UK, not just London, and has been in operation for years. It is run by the same company that owns the Daily Mail and the London Evening Standard. The other papers just jumped on the bandwagon more recently because they saw the opportunity to sell lots and lots of advertising space.

Bear in mind that these papers are run on a shoestring and very light on content. They have NO comment pages (except for film reviews and the like), no investigatory journalism or anything like that. It's mostly just press releases dressed up as news stories, and what news there is is just repackaged from the likes of Reuters and internet sources. These papers do not break exclusives or run original stories.

As you say, these FREE rags are just vehicles for propoganda.  Think that Bo-Jo (Boris Johnson) has ditched Ken's "The London Paper" and is instead using the money from our taxes which paid for it, for some other project.

Have heard on LBC this morning that Bo-Jo is off on the jolly old hols in Turkey.  If this is what we're gonna get on day three in the job, I shudder to think what will happen on day ten and beyond.

It's too early to say - not a bad start so far - only a few more murders (stabbings to death) than same time last year.  Blame the parents, that should cure the problem.

The only left of centre rag now available to us here in sunny Greenwich on Thames is our very own beloved rag, "Greenwich Time" - I mean just how imaginative a title is that?  Greenwich Village in NYC has it's own much more adult and interesting local rag with exactly the same title.

To keep 2 lots of people in a job, the first lot to distribute them and the second lot to clean them up from various places they are left, IE: benches, buses, trains etc!
