Anyone ever done an Earthwatch expedition?

I'm thinking about doing a family expedition next year when my son turns 10. Just wondering if anyone had gone on these, or on any of the expeditions, and could tell me about their experience. It's really expensive, I want to make sure it's worth the $.

  1. What an outstanding organization!  Yet you're right, they do charge too much to "volunteers" -- more so considering the effort and work they provide.

Depending on the program you select I think it will be a great experience for you and your son.  Don't feel hesitant to "bargain"  with the event organizes on how you'll be spending your time; after all your putting up the cash and providing the work.

I was a guest speaker at program Earthwatch hosted in the Puget Sound area.  I was impressed overall by their professionalism and dedication.  I hope they provide you and your son the same positive experience.

    Good luck.

  2. no

  3. There are many other ways of doing similar stuff without shelling out the big bucks.

Just because they have a catchy name does not give them the right to overcharge.

For that matter you can always arrange your own programme. Liase with a charity doing work you agree with & offer some help. If it is a charity spread over a large geographic area you could maybe do some work at weekends near home & get to know them - and them you, then go to one of their locations further away for your 'expedition'.

This way you know what to expect, get to provide worthwhile help that you know you both can cope with in advance & don't shell out big bucks for some organisation's marketing costs. maybe not quite as grand sounding, but less worries (tested near home) and a more "one-on-one" approach. The smaller the charity you choose to help, the more appreciated you will be and the more difference you can make.

  4. I eagerly await any answers, because I am wondering the exact same thing.
