Question:

Anyone ever experiece "land sickness" AFTER getting off your cruise at debarkation?

My fiancee and I just got back from our first cruise, a one week Western Carribean cruise...and loved it. He got a "little" sea sick while on the ship, but nothing horrible. However, when we debarked, he said he felt like the land was moving and would get real dizzy whenever he stood up. Is this normal? (I felt fine, just tired after all those shore excursions and all the fun I had!)

It went away for him after 3 or so days, but he just did not feel well AT ALL.

I just hope this doesn't dissuade him from cruising again in the future. I am in love with cruising now!

So, is this somewhat common?

  1. Yep.  Your  body gets used to the rocking of the boat and you don't feel it anymore....then, when you get onto the land, you feel like your moving because your equillibrium thinks it should be moving.

Usually some motion sickness medication for a day will take care of this problem....even when you are not moving!

This is caused by the inner ear canal which is where your balance is determined.  It no longer senses movement, and causes one to feel "land sick."  It can happen in just going on a boat for the afternoon!  Just be sure to take some motion sickness medicine both before you get on the boat and when you get off!

  2. I get this every time I cruise and I hate it.  I am land sick for about one day for every day I am on the ship.  Last time it lasted almost two weeks!

I still go every year though.  I hope your fiancee loved cruising enough to deal with it, because to me it is worth it!  :-)

  3. Absolutely....been on 6 cruises, before my daughter started working for Royal Caribbean.  It's called getting your sea-legs back.  It'll go away before long.  Tell him to do some walking on a treadmill or run around the block a few times.  When he gets older, he'll probably learn he has an inner-ear in-balance.  Lots of meds a Dr. can prescribe.

  4. That sort of happened to me.  I couldn't feel the ship moving but when I got off at ports, I would loose my balance for a couple of minutes.  But it went away after a short while.

  5. I have been on cruises, and it sounds to me like your body is craving another cruise.  They are habit forming you know.
