Anyone ever have a full leg walking cast?

My Dr. said that my next cast might be with a rubber heel for walking. I am very curious about how it was walking in yours or anything else that you can tell me about it. My knee will be bent very slightly if at all.

  1. walking casts are good because you then start building the muscles back up in your leg.

very strange to walk in to start with but you will get the hang of it pretty soon.

the starngest thing is when it comes off your leg feels all light like it will float off lol

  2. Well I've never had one- but I can give you some info about yours.  Although it's called a walking cast, you aren't going to be tossing away the crutches just yet.  The rubber heal will let you put some weight on the leg, but you will still need crutches for walking and standing.  The idea is to get your leg back in more natural motion so you don't lose as much muscle and bone mass while the bone finishes healing.  And it will actually heal a bit faster at that point if it's back in some use.  The rest of the cast will be much like the one you currently have.  It will itch, and still be about as pleasant as it is now.  You will have to practice some at first to manage walking with it, as your knee still won't be bending or flexing as it would normally.  You will be depending on the crutches to help you balance and bear weight for the leg while the other leg is moving forwards.  But for the most part, about all that will change is that you will be able to put the foot on the ground and step on it- where you can't right now.  You will go from a tripod to a quad-foot pedestrian with the walking cast.  Before then, you will want to find some big socks that you don't mind stretching out of shape, to cover your toes and protect them from the cold or wet.  I usually suggest large tube socks, cut down to about half the size of the foot.
