My one year old pomeranian died Tuesday during a routine neutering operation. The doctor said his heart stopped twice during the operation, and finally he stopped breathing...I`m crushed, anyone heard or had this happen to their pet. The vet did an xray and he said he had an enlarged heart. What could be the congenital condition that caused that??He was vet checked by this vet when I bought him, and he had been put under general before without complications, ( broken leg)....anyone???

  1. unfortunately it was most likely from complications with anesthesia. just like with a human people can have a bad reaction to it if they have an underlying condition. unfortunately if the puppy did have an enlarged heart the anesthesia from the surgery would have most likely killed the puppy. however, i would think by listening to the heart a head of time they would have noticed this.

i am so sorry for your loss :(

  2. i work at a humane society and we have had quite a few dogs that have had complications while being neutered, but none (that i know of) that have actually died. i have heard of dogs dying from it before, even though its rare, it does happen. sorry about your dog : [

  3. This is some what related to your story I had a blue murral sheltie and for the past 8 years see was kind and gental during this past winter she stopped eating and dint drink that much so we conserned took her to the vet and they said nothing was wrong. She kept doing the not eating and she started throwing up and couldnt walk and she would fall down if she got up. We took her to the vet again they said it was pointless to keep bringing her they took her temp and said she was healthy. Finaly we put the last straw down and demanded they see her and demand that they run a couple of test......... The test came back on the xray they took she had a mass inside her that was pushing on her intestints and enlarging her heart and making her really sick..... The vet told us are possible options surgury asap or for her to be put down we inquired about the surgury and they said that it was going to cost $4,800.00 to do he dint really tell us about the pros and cons of it he said after the surgury she would proubly be in a great deel of pain so we decided to have her put down and after that was done the vet told us if we went thru with the surgury that she could have bleed to death or stopped breathing.
