Anyone ever owe tax for smokes purchased online?

  1. Several states, PA and NJ among them, have started cracking down the last couple years on people not paying state tax on cigarettes purchased online.


  2. Many states are cracking down on untaxed tobacco products purchased on line.  Federal law now requires the vendors to turn over sales records to the states upon demand and many people have been stunned by bills running into the thousands in some extreme cases.  

    The only way to skirt that now is to buy at a bricks-and-mortar shop in a low tax state or an Indian Smoke Shop in some states.  Legally you still owe the taxes, but the states have no way to enforce it at present.
