I found a notice from them on my front door saying they want to speak to me regarding an individual who is being considered for a position of trust with the US government. I do not know of anyone who has applied for such a potistion. Is this a legit organization? Anyone had any dealings with them before? Thanks in advance

  1. It's probably legit.  OPM does all the clearance investigations for both DOD and DOE.  Probably some acquaintance of yours has applied for some job that requires at least a secret level clearance and they are doing the background investigation.  The investigator should show you credentials and will ask you several questions about the reliability and habits of the person.  Answer truthfully, don't embellish or go off on tangents about the person.

  2. It's normal procedure, it's a background check into the identity of someone they are considering hiring.  They came to my house asking about a neighbor once, he joined the CIA.  I'd make my house pretty and invite them by for tea.

  3. Sounds fishy (or maybe phishy) to me.  I never got that but I did get something once asking if I would be willing to take a survey about public transportation.  The letter was made to look like it came from an official government agency but what was odd was that it had a $5 bill (actual money and not a check) enclosed as a payment for my time if I would contact them.  I did not call them.

As for you, I would be extra careful.  Do not disclose your personal information to them at all to be on the safe side.

  4. Check it out with US office of personnel management (sounds phony) or your local police department first.

    It might be a scam.
