Anyone ever stay at a Hostel before?

Question

We are thinking of staying at a Hostel while honeymooning (possibly in Ireland), the prices seem very reasonable, and we found some with private bathrooms. I have never stayed in one, and don't know of anyone who has my fiance and I are almost 30-paying for the wedding ourselves and want to save money...but don't want to be in a foreign country staying at a horrid place. I would rather spend the money if they are really not ok to stay at.

I think this may help you.In Dublin where I live a lot of "people" from Eastern Europe/Africa and generally recovering Addicts/alcoholics who have no where else to go live in Hostels.

The ones outside Dublin are as hostels should be.Lots of travellers of different walks of life.

Want my advice!!!!

Go hosteling in Italy.Its warmer nicer and probably a lot cheaper to.

(The people in the Irish Tourist Board probably dont like me)

There are lots of good hostels in Ireland. The website An Oige (http://www.anoige.ie/) is part of the international youth hostel association, so that's a good place to start.

Hostels do vary in quality though, there are some fantastic ones, and some less than pleasant ones.

If you're going to Galway, Sleepzone (http://www.sleepzone.ie/) has an extremely good reputation.

Perhaps if you modify your question with some town names, people will be able to give you more specific advice.

My only experience has been that I've seen lots of them on travel shows, which I love to watch. Of course they vary, just as people's individual homes vary. But all the ones I've seen are just several bunks in a room, a bathroom, and a common kitchen. I think I'd stay closer to home and stay at a nice hotel before I'd do a hostel for my honeymoon.

Privacy is not so much as at a hotel though...

the YHA checks hostels around the UK (thats the Youth Hostel Association or soemthing like that). I assume Ireland will be similar. They are not horrid and you can be lucky. It really depends on how you will plan your honeymoon. If you plan not to spend much time in the hostel but be out and about all the time then it should be ok. You might even be so lucky that there is few people and few of them use the common rooms. I find hostels very cozy when there is only a couple of backpacking students sitting in one corner laughing, a couple in the other having only eyes for eachother and some older person sitting in a chair reading a book.

I visit Ireland every year.  I lived in Dublin all last year.  Hostels are fine.  They are full of other travellers not druggies or homeless people.  It is a younger crowd, but who cares?  You just need a bed.  Ive been travelling for 6 years staying at hostels all over the world.  They are just fine.
