  1. Well , I don't really have advice about where you want to go to study that specific subject, but I did spend 9 months in a different country, and I did it  when I was 16.  I believe, however, being with a host family and apart of a local family helped me feel less homesick.  I am sure you can do it; you will be in a completely new place with a million new people and distractions and very little will make you remind of home.

I guess going without a host family is not bad , but you might get a lot more homesick, depending if you are a person who is prone to that.

I personally ( seeing that I am still very young) would prefer to be with a host family; as long as they are nice and decent, I consider it preferable.  Being with a local family makes you feel more apart of the country, makes you feel like you have a place and some roots there almost immediately. Plus they can show you around and help you meet new people.

They are almost always a great support system. You can go through a program and be placed with a family, or even be placed with other students in your same position.

  2. The United States is going to be nigh on impossible for mid-wife or nurse to immigrate to based on employment. Visas are scarce and hospitals have little money to sponsor foreign workers who are not doctors, surgeons etc to work for them.

Furthermore you would require expensive re-training in the U.S. before you are legally able to work in either position.
