  1. What kind of deckhand? If you want to be a deckhand on a shrimp boat, have fun. I did it for four years. It is hard work because you are constantly picking shrimp, icing them down, pulling in nets ect...If you are talking about being a deckhand in some other way, then I need to know what you want to do. It is different depending on the deckhand job. Commercial fishing is a dying business and both the federal and state government have made so many regulations that you can't make any profit.

  2. Hello there, I just noticed your question and even though I am not qualified to answer since I have never worked as a deck hand, I have talked to several deck hands as I work in LA.  They have all said it is hard work, handling rigging and winches, and sometimes for long hrs.  I have seen the boats in the canals and they move very large barges of materials and ships too.  The men generally said it can be dirty at times. Sadly one man had lost his pinky finger after being pinched in the rigging.  ouch.  I hope that helps a little, sorry for the gloomy story.

  3. towing is a bit of a dangerous affair....you really need some experience`around big work boats as the heavy ropes and winches are very dangerous to work around.
