Anyone familiar with Poe...?

Specifically that poem called "The Imp of the Perverse". For anyone who isn't, it's basically about an otherwise normal person randomly getting an idea so bizzare it's like WTF, where did that come from? Anyone ever get one of those thoughts?

  1. I thought this question was going to be about "Poe's Law."

    My bad.

  2. I like Poe.  And Laa-Laa (Richard Dawkins wife?), Tinky Winky and Dipsy!!

For those who are wondering about the Richard Dawkins reference, he is married to LaLa Ward, who played the Second Romana (and a piece of the Key to Time!)  on Doctor Who.  She was formerly married to Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor.

  3. The Devil whispered those perverse thoughts to him..............get thee behind me Satan

  4. Thank you..I was getting bored with the usual R&S fare tonight...I believe I'll go check that poem out...you have given my life direction, kind sir (or at least my night direction...)

EDIT:  I read it - actually, twice...the beginning part is so convoluted with this 19th century "doctor-speak" it's like trying to pick up a dry text and absorb it...but by the time he gets to his signature Poe-twist of things, he's hooked me with his talk about the internal struggle inside...the tourette's syndrome-like confession is particularly revealing, and that's why I had to go back and read it again...

The copy I have (COMPLETE TALES AND POEMS OF EDGAR ALLEN POE, Barnes & Noble Leather edition) has the story in prose though, not poetry.

And so, more to the point of your question, yes I do get those thoughts...in fact there were some parts of the story that actually had me recognizing myself.  In fact, R&S is one of those things that puts me out of myself as I avoid what I should be doing - mostly because it's so disconnected to responsibilities (real world ones)...I have my big dreams and goals, like everybody else, but they are shoved to the side as my addled brain loses a sense of time and purpose, and I'm caught up in that first "single thought" that is enough to snowball dow the hill into indulgence.

Thanks again for bringing it up...I'd forgotten just how much fun Poe is to read....

  5. All the time.

  6. Uhhhh, Not to sounds crazy or anything, because, I know this is the internet adn there's a LOT of weirdo=s out there, but beleive this or not, I am Distantly Related to Poe....Poe's Mother (His Birth Mother, not adoptive mother) came over to the US from Germany, I beleive...and her last name is the same as my last name (my madien name, that is) and Our family tree goes clear back to her....so yeah...I love writing also. I write things, that are like, a mix of Poe and King, actually, so lol. yeah....but hey, the writing talent runs in my family. :D Anyhow, I have never read that one from him, but yeah, I have had thoguhts liek that before, Have you? Anyhow, I  thoguht i'd tell you an interesting peice of information there, about me, that hardly no one knows, but my family (of course) and my Husband, and my close friends, but yeah...heck, this is the internet....Like I'm going to come across someone I KNOW in real life on here! CHA! Give me a BREAK! LOL!.....
