Question:

Anyone feed their pets Orijen?

In light of Feli/Canidae raising their price and lowering their quality (joy of joys), we're switching our dogs and cat or Orijen.

We've got three dogs. 50lb GSD/Aussie mix, 30lb GSD/Lab mix, 30lb Greater Swiss Mountain Dog mix. Give or take three or so pounds. With Canidae we fed all three of them about 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day, depending on individual weight/weather/activity.

Orijen says to feed 1¼ - 2¼ c (more active) or 1 - 1¾ c (less active) for dogs 22-45 lbs, and 2¾ - 3¾ c (more active) or 1¾ - 2½ c (less active) for dogs 45 - 75 lbs.

That's fine and dandy, but I've seen many say that this is too much by far for many of their dogs. I'm aware bags say to feed more than needed in most cases, but I've seen people say that their active 75lb Siberian only eats 2 cups on an active day, max.

What are your thoughts or imput? I'd love to hear from someone who's fed this before or personally seen results.

  1. We feed our pets Acana, which is made by the same company. Champion Foods. It is excellent. We free feed our 9 cats and all are ideal weight and eat about 1/2 as much as they do on other foods. It is excellent for my animals.

  2. My Beagle use to be on Royal Canin and he hated the taste of it as well it made his coat look like c**p. He lost so much hair and it was dry looking. I was told about Orijen and he has been on it now for 2 months. He loves the taste of it and his coat looks awesome. He is an active Beagle and only eats 1 cup mixed with 2 tablespoons of wet dog food. This is enough for him. There are days he can't eat it all at one sitting and will finish it through out the afternoon and evening. Just follow what is on the bag if using this dog food. There are 2 kinds. One that is all fish and the other that has chicken and other real meat mixed with fish. Good luck!

  3. Kill it with fire.

  4. I would never feed my husky more than two cups of food a day, regardless of how active he was!  He just doesnt need that many calories.  But the higher quality foods usually require even less than most brands.  I would suggest starting out with the same amount that he is getting right now, and just see how he does on it. If he starts to thin out or gain weight, you can make adjustments accordingly.

  5. i have no idea what orijen is, never heard of it, i feed my dog inova

  6. I feed Orijen, i have been for a about 1 year now and my dogs coats, poops, health, breath have never been better.  I will comment that my dogs are currently on the 6 fish formula and they have really bad farts! ( i know that's gross just being honest) It is because the fish formula is too oily for MY dogs stomachs.  That isn't the case with all breeds so don't worry! I will be putting them back on regular adult because it is the best!  I would recommend feeding the suggestion on the back of the bag.  Every ones dog is different if your dog is within the weight standard it will be fine.  Check the breed standard.  Good luck!

  7. i never ever ever feed what the bag says, ever.

feed less than the canidae, if your dog gets chubby, cut back. If they get way too thin, feed more.

jus as a reference....my 45lb VERY active dog only ever ate 1 cup total of EVO a day.

  8. orijen is a good food. It's too rich for my dog though. I am a former Canidae feeder too. I switched my dog over to California natural chicken and rice.
